Actually, the root of that quote precede's Chaucer's Pardoner by centuries and is found in The Bible, wherein It Is Written that it is *the love* of money (i.e. idolatrous greed) that is the root of all evil.
But leave it to you to misquote something for the sake of conforming it to what would be a non sequitur if the proper quotation was used.
